My Chicken Soup is Medicine
I heard the voice to make chicken soup for a friend I rented my beach house from. He was driving back from Florida and I wanted to gift him my soup for his return.
Making my chicken soup is an act of absolute love and devotion.
It’s a family recipe my grandma made, and my mother, and now my daughter.
I have made it hundreds of times and I have recently simplified it. It’s actually better than it’s ever been.
So good in fact, that my neighbor asked me what that smell was.
I loved that he asked.
He was swaying and mimicking how he’s been smelling it through the open window. He shared how taken he was by the scent, and all of his curiosities — was that ginger or Chinese food or…?
The thing about my soup — my secret — is to cook it for 2 full days.
That’s how the bones and marrow and skin make the most delicious bone broth.
It’s medicinal.
So my neighbor was smelling my soup through the window for 2 days.
I told him what the smell was and I also shared my recipe with him.
He went on and on about how great it smelled. It was quite adorable and I let it all the way in.
